MonFayette Expressway over the Monongahela River

Duquesne, PA

The main goal of the MonFayette Expressway is to support the rebuilding of the numerous small towns of the Monongehela Valley which were left almost destitute by the collapse of the American steel industry in the 1980's. Much of that support will be functional improvement in transportation access. Some is symbolic and aspirational. The crossing will provide splendid views of all of the valley's features, making the valley attractive as a place to live and work. Travelers' and visitors' first impression of the valley will be influenced in large part by the visual quality of the bridge.

With all of this in mind, a Vision Statement established that the bridges should:

  • Evoke the area's industrial heritage through the use of technically efficient forms and shapes that take maximum advantage of modern engineering techniques and modern industrial materials.
  • Be seen as a striking, memorable, easily understood form from key viewpoints;
  • Make the valley with its bridge a visible milestone for travelers on the MonFayette;
  • Make views up and down the river available to travelers on the MonFayette Expressway.
